Over the coming weeks and months, join me as I develop our brand new garden.  As a trained horticulturalist and garden designer, I'll be guiding you through the seasons ahead, sharing tips, successes and failures and exploring some of the new and inventive products on the market.

This year is the first spring season here at the Spear and Jackson garden, and I'm looking forward to cultivating a wide range of plants, flowers, vegetables and even some fruit.

Its a small garden, with a modern courtyard around one side, family lawn area with raised borders around the other and to the front, a modern take on a traditional cottage border.

Have a great gardening week.

Designing a garden

When it comes to designing and planting your garden, be brave.  The more confidence you have in the design and the bolder you can be with colour or planting the better.

When it comes to designing and planting your garden, be brave.  The more confidence you have in the design and the bolder you can be with colour or planting the better.  It’s important not to be put off by what others think, and unless you’ve seen their own garden and love it, you go ahead and get creative … after all, it’s your garden, so do as you wish!

As a designer I’m known for using lots of colour, either in the structures we install or the planting.  But I have to admit, I do it with style.  I’d never put every colour under the sun together (or it could look like the outside of a pub), and I mainly try and stick to whites, purples and blues for early colour and then have a big late summer crescendo using yellows, reds and oranges.

Be Bold!

Watch this week’s video blog to see a newly built garden and how the strong lines of the design will in time, be softened by the planting.
In difficult economic times, doing it yourself is a great way to save money, and Spear and Jackson have all the tools you need to complete the job.  If you fancy having a go at laying a patio, log in next week, when we’ll be showing you how.

But, for now, have a great gardening week.

PS.....watch out for my gardening Blog video in the next few days!
