Choosing and planting bulbs which will flower next spring and summer seems like ages away, and we haven't  even put the garden to sleep.  But planted now, you'll ensure you get some great colour in the garden, at a time when you'll really appreciate it.

Take a look at my 'how to' guide for the best way to plant bulbs.  All you will need is the handy bulb planter, which makes planting bulbs really easy and quick.  Simply push the tool into the ground, while twisting back and forth.  When you reach the required depth (2-3 times the depth of the bulb) remove the bulb planter from it's newly created hole, and place the bulb in the base of the hole. Return the bulb planter to the hole and squeeze the handle to release the soil. Firm down and move on to the next.

PLANTING BULBS

Bulbs look better if planted in groups, and look more natural if planted in random numbers, so don't dot plant bulbs, unless you want to achieve a more formal, ordered look.  A good example would be where Alliums are planted though a series of very regimented grasses.

Bulbs which can be planted at this time of the year include; Crocus, Narcissus, Daffodils, Alliums and Hyacinths.  I prefer to plant Tulip bulbs in November and Snowdrops in March as the don't very often do that well when planted as dry bulbs.

Happy planting!
