A Christmas wish granted!

Earlier this month we were delighted to make a  donation of garden tools to support the restoration of the house and gardens at Wentworth Woodhouse, a stately home in South Yorkshire located close to S&J head office.

The preservation trust restoring the mansion near Rotherham recently launched a 50-items long Wishlist allowing their supporters to gift or donate items costing from a few pounds up to tens of thousands, including helping to pay the gas and electricity bills. Local resident Patricia Gardiner picked up a Wishlist brochure on a recent visit to the house and spotted a request for Spear & Jackson garden tools. It took a quick conversation with husband John our Warehouse Manager, to get the ball rolling and we were soon able to grant the garden tool wishes outlined on the wishlist.

Head Gardener, at Wentworth Woodhouse, Scott Jamieson said “Our loyal gardening volunteers are delighted. Thanks to Spear & Jackson, they now have quality tools for the job.”

The Wentworth Woodhouse Wishlist features items ranging from mops and buckets to a £100,000 water main pipe, plus restoration of a host of the mansion’s stunning historic features, such as a huge crystal chandelier in the Van Dyck state room which needs £6,000 of repairs.

“We’re delighted to be supplying our garden tools to help maintain the gardens and grounds at Wentworth Woodhouse and would urge others to get involved and support the restoration of this important local stately home.” Said S&J UK Marketing Manager Karen Abbott.

S&J itself was launched in Sheffield in 1760, just a decade after Wentworth’s beautiful Palladian East Front was created. Sarah McLeod, CEO of Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, welcomed the donation saying “This is our first wish granted. We are extremely grateful and proud, too, that it is from a company with a similar great South Yorkshire heritage and we would love to hear from anyone else who can help to turn our wishes into reality.”
