Introducing a new look for the Spear & Jackson Kew Gardens Collection

Originally launched in 2013 the Kew Gardens Collection is Spear & Jackson’s premium range of garden hand tools and accessories, developed in collaboration with the world famous Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Each tool in the range has been developed to exacting standards, with high performance, durability and user-comfort firmly in mind. The resulting range of more than 100 tools and accessories is wholly endorsed and genuinely used by Kew’s professional horticultural team. Spear & Jackson is proud to support Kew’s pivotal role as a world leader in plant science and conservation, and every purchase of a product from the Kew Gardens Collection ensures a valuable contribution towards Kew’s vital work.

For the 2022 season the range has been given a refreshed look with new branding designed around botanical illustrations that are synonymous with Kew. In addition, the refresh has prompted a review of the environmental credentials for the packaging of the range resulting in a commitment to reduce or remove entirely any unfriendly materials such as single use plastics, and to get rid of any surplus packaging altogether. The improvements made to date include:

  • The removal of all adhesive brand labels from the digging, cultivating and hand tools. These have been replaced with a smart new pad print that incorporates the recognisable logo of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

  • Materials used for backing cards and swing tags have been changed to FSC® materials

  • Even the hangers for swing tags have been considered and have been changed from a synthetic nylon to a waxed cotton and a plastic badge that was part of the original hanger has been removed entirely.

  • The amount of plastic used has been reduced by making simple changes, for example secatuers which used to be in full blister packs will now be in a much smaller partial blister. The smaller blister still keeps the blades safely covered and allows them to be tried at point of sale. In addition, the blisters on Kew secateurs will now be made from friendlier PET plastics.

These packaging changes are already underway and will be introduced on a rolling basis. Spear & Jackson recognises that there will always be more that can be done and is working hard to address these challenges in their drive for continuous improvement in product packaging and sustainability. The Company is confident that many of the new standards that have been identified for the Kew Gardens Collection can be rolled out across the wider ranges of Spear & Jackson Garden tools.

The new look range and packaging were previewed at the Garden and Leisure Industry Trade Show, GLEE 2021.
