Over the coming weeks and months, join me as I develop our brand new garden.  As a trained horticulturalist and garden designer, I'll be guiding you through the seasons ahead, sharing tips, successes and failures and exploring some of the new and inventive products on the market.

This year is the first spring season here at the Spear and Jackson garden, and I'm looking forward to cultivating a wide range of plants, flowers, vegetables and even some fruit.

Its a small garden, with a modern courtyard around one side, family lawn area with raised borders around the other and to the front, a modern take on a traditional cottage border.

Have a great gardening week.

This week’s tool is the shovel.  There’s not much I can really say about it as it’s just a piece of equipment for moving materials from one place to another … isn’t it?  Well essentially yes, but so many people don’t understand the difference between a shovel and a spade.

This week I’m road testing the new Liteweight border fork.  Like the border spade I used last week, its 25% lighter than traditional versions, and its great for my raised borders.  Raised beds are so popular now and this fork is a great height and weight for the forking over of the veg beds or for applying a layer of garden compost, which is exactly what I’ve been doing this week.

This weeks tool is probably one of the most well used in the garden, and even non gardeners often have an old rusty one lurking around in their garage or shed.  The humble spade has a multitude of uses, from digging on the veg plot and planting trees, to chopping up clods and even acts as a resting place for the local robin, but a well loved spade is a thing to cherish.
